Why do teeth turn yellow?
Why do teeth turn yellow?
While teeth lose their color and shine due to factors like coffee, tea, and sugary drinks, these effects can usually be reversed with regular brushing. However, the primary cause of yellow teeth lies beneath the surface. Beneath the enamel is a yellowish layer called dentin. When your enamel erodes due to acidic foods, teeth grinding, scratches, or age-related factors, this yellowish layer begins to surface, causing your teeth to appear yellower. Genetic factors also play a significant role in variations in enamel thickness and dentin color.

There are two methods for whitening teeth.
There are two methods for whitening teeth.
Firstly, there are two methods for teeth whitening: using whitening products under the supervision of a dentist that penetrate the enamel and alter the yellow color of the dentin; and secondly, using products sold as "whiteners" that are designed to remove superficial stains on the surface of your teeth.
It's important to know that the first method is more effective and permanent, and when applied correctly, it is less harmful. Abrasive whitening methods only work for surface stains and cannot affect the dentin layer. Furthermore, if these materials are not used correctly, they can further erode your tooth enamel, damaging both the appearance and health of your teeth.
Therefore, many dentists do not recommend the use of "whitening" toothpastes, which actually have little or no effect. Even those with the correct ingredients cannot be effectively treated with simple brushing because they need to be left on your tooth surface for at least twenty minutes.
For this reason, the most effective and, more importantly, the healthiest method of teeth whitening is to undergo professional whitening treatments under the supervision of a dentist. Your dentist will determine the appropriate materials and duration for teeth whitening treatment, whether in the office or at home, taking care to avoid damaging your tooth enamel.
On the other hand, it should be remembered that the most effective way to have white teeth is regular brushing and flossing with non-abrasive toothpaste from childhood. Frequent consumption of beverages that stain teeth, such as tea, coffee, and red wine, as well as tobacco use and certain medications, can also negatively affect tooth color.
When whitening your teeth, the first priority should be protecting your oral and dental health. For a more beautiful smile with safe and healthy teeth whitening, you can make an appointment with our dentists at Pamir Dent!
