Orthodontics

Orthodontists are dental specialists who diagnose and treat problems related to the position, alignment or spacing of teeth, as well as irregularities in the face and jaw. We use a range of specialised treatments, including braces and other oral appliances, to correct these issues.

WHY SHOULD I HAVE ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?

Why should I have orthodontic treatment?

There are two good reasons for this: aesthetics and function. Having an attractive smile not only changes the way people see you, but also boosts your self-confidence. Orthodontic treatment also improves your overall dental health by making it easier to keep your teeth clean. As it is very difficult to care for misaligned teeth properly, it is often difficult to protect them from decay and plaque build-up. Food particles trapped in gaps or narrow spaces make it easier for bacteria to feed and live on your teeth.

When should orthodontic treatment begin?

When should orthodontic treatment begin?

You are never too old to start orthodontic treatment, but starting at an earlier age may make it easier to treat your problems. We recommend that a child who needs orthodontic treatment have their first visit to the dentist around the age of 7.

Is orthodontic treatment mainly for children?

Is orthodontic treatment mainly for children?

No, approximately 25% of orthodontic cases involve adults. If you have previously undergone orthodontic treatment or if your smile issues have emerged in adulthood, you have the opportunity to achieve a better smile with options such as invisible Invisalign aligners or clear porcelain braces.

How can I recognise a potential closure or
biting problem?

How can I recognise a potential closure or biting problem?

Crooked, overlapping, or misaligned teeth are a clear indication that treatment is necessary. Less obvious signs include mouth breathing, frequent biting of the cheeks or gums, difficulty speaking, and thumb sucking that continues beyond the age of 3-4. Teeth that do not close properly when the mouth is closed, or teeth that shift or make noise when the jaw moves, may also indicate an orthodontic problem.

Will it hurt when I get braces fitted?

Will it hurt when I get braces fitted?

Having braces fitted is a completely painless and discomfort-free procedure. After the braces are placed on your teeth, you may experience minor discomfort for a few days, which will gradually subside. In this case, you can use mild painkillers recommended by your dentist, although this is rarely necessary.

How long will my treatment last?

How long will my treatment last?

The treatment process and duration vary for each individual, but the active phase of treatment (i.e., the period when braces or other appliances are fitted) typically lasts between 6 and 30 months. Afterwards, invisible retainers or night-time retainers are used to ensure your smile remains stable.

08.-

How often should I come for appointments?

How often should I come for appointments?

This depends on what is being done and how often your teeth need to be monitored. During active treatment, you will usually visit our clinic every 3 to 10 weeks.

Will I need to have my teeth extracted?

Will I need to have my teeth extracted?

If your teeth are severely crowded (your mouth is too small to accommodate all your teeth properly) or if you have teeth that are being pushed down below the gum line by other teeth, tooth extraction may be necessary. When it comes to young patients, early treatment is important to prevent unnecessary tooth extractions.

Do I have to watch what I eat?

Do I have to watch what I eat?

Yes, you should temporarily avoid foods that could damage or get stuck in your braces. These include hard raw vegetables, hard sweets, caramel and ice cubes. We will provide you with a list of foods to avoid.

Do I need regular dental check-ups
while undergoing orthodontic treatment?

Do I need regular dental check-ups while undergoing orthodontic treatment?

Of course. In fact, this is more important than ever! When wearing braces, it can be difficult to keep teeth free from plaque (and potentially decay). Your dentist can help prevent these problems with regular cleaning and check-ups.

Does my treatment end when my braces come off?

Does my treatment end when my braces come off?

Mostly no. If you do not wear your retainers after having your braces removed, your teeth can quickly shift from their current position and all the effort you put into your treatment will be lost! Retainer treatment helps you maintain your beautiful smile for life.
