Grillz, also known as removable jewelled dental accessories, were first worn by hip-hop artists in New York in the early 1980s and became popular in the mid-2000s due to the rise of pop culture.

How are dental jewellery (grillz) applied?
Grillz are a type of jewellery worn over the teeth. To complete the Grillz design, the dentist obtains upper and lower jaw models from inside the mouth using digital measurements or silicone-based measurement material. Grillz analyses are performed based on the models created, and the desired design, materials and jewellery are decided according to the patient's request. The base material can be designed entirely to suit the individual. They are produced from gold, silver and metal bases. They are usually removable accessories that are placed inside the mouth. After selecting the desired top structure design with precious stones, a customised production is made. Grillz can be applied to a single tooth or to any number of teeth.
